This is a people story so if you are not into reading just ignore:-
During the last two days here we have ended up at the Info Centre several times. Each time I have found myself chatting with a lovely lady (my age) from a Station about 25ks out of town. She works there one day a week but was there today to fill in for a lady who worked at the races and was exhausted.
Last night as we were having a whisky with Jimmy Sturgess who told us about the waddi tree. Who knows about it?
Apparently there are only four stands left in Aust. and they are supposed to be the hardest tree in the world.
He told us there was one in the town and a stand somewhere between here and Birdsville.
I raised this with the lady I mentioned and she immediately invited us to go out the the station she lived on to not only see a very large stand of the Waddi but told us how to drive down the entry to another Station on which stood a waddi marked by Burke and Wills.
It was late in the afternoon and we were amazed by the light whilst standing touching a tree that these men carved.
We drove on into the waddi forest and as we walked around I was able to photograph a flock of Cockatiel (sp?) and a swarm of Budgies. Not only that the lovely lady pulled up on her way home to the homestead. We had a great chat in the middle of this amazing forest as the cattle roamed up the very rutted road towards us. I wanted to stay for ever but Pa was hungry!!
Next blog I will load some photos.
Tomorrow morning we head for Birdsville and back to my red country - and no people.
Stay well.
Cheers
Mary and John
