When we got to the village near Uluru we were spooked by the number of tourists so decided to grab supplies and head out to a pull off we stayed at last year. Deb and Ian it was the one we stayed at when we left the Mereenie road. John reckoned he found the ashes from our fire!
The Mereenie road was much rougher but the red ridges were worth a second viewing.
It is Albert Namatjira (?sp) country and as we drove into Hermannsburg we visited the house he built for his wife and seven children. It has been restored but is in a deserted settlement and presents a sad picture of yesterday and today. There is a collection of his watercolours and those of the Hermannsburg School at the heritage precinct of the Hermennsburg Mission.

The mission was huge and had everything a community needed including a large tannery with huge vats. It finally closed in the fifties.

This was where they kept the people who needed to be isolated with typhoid. A bit harsh.

  1. That Typhoid hut looks a treat. Do you think it would keep the kids in? I don't want them being able to escape.... xo GM
